This is the best I can do with a condo porch. The seeds are from Pepper Joe's. They got a late start because San Diego had an unseasonable cold snap (cold for us) where temps at night were below what makes germinating seeds happy. They were started in peat pots. We bought PJ's "Surprise Package" so we have no idea what peppers are growing! We also haven't decided who gets to taste them to find out. Other pepper friends have fruit already. Oh well. Peppers are perennials, so we'll be getting fruit from them for several years.

June 9, 2006 Progress so far. If you recognize any of our pepper varieties, give me a holler. What you see that doesn't look like either peppers or maters would be marigolds. Rumor is that bugs who like peppers don't like marigolds. |
Tomatoes are the largest plants. All seedlings were started on the
same day. They're called Orange Glo tomatoes, yes they will be orange, but they're also low acid, which are the only kind I can eat.

What we learned this year: A balanced fertilizer means you get slower growth. Last year we used the Osmocote that I had for house plants. Worked great for lots of leaves, not so good for lots of fruit. |

I went on a trip to Washington for 10 days and when I came back, I found these changes. |
Tomatoes There is one baby tomato on the vine and lots of blooms. The heat wave toasted some of the top leaves, so I pinched them off. If you look at the previous picture, you can see the top of the cage. Here, the cage is almost invisible.
|
The Three Peppers They're all doing okay, most a bit slowly, but you can see one is an overachiever. |
The Overachiever It got long and leggy and I don't know why. I thought that if I pinched off some of the side branches, it would produce more. Maybe it's just the way this variety grows. |

COLD SNAP! January 2007
My poor babies didn't do well when temps in San Diego were down in the 40's. Weather service says this is the coldest winter since the 1940's. |

Most of the leaves have fallen and those that remain are yellow and droopy |
