There is a delicate balance between food that has
the spirit of fun and that which is just too disgusting for some of your
friends to actually eat. I am one of those who won't eat a bloody brain,
for example. You know your friends, so plan accordingly.
Freeze plastic
spiders in ice cubes.
BLOODY BITES
Salsa could be seen
as bloody, but it's not gross like some Halloween dishes can be.
Personally, I don't want to eat something that would normally make me
want to barf. So, here is a simple plate of munchies that are delicious
as well as being appropriate colors.
-
Triscuit crackers
by Nabisco
-
Cream Cheese
-
Cheddar Cheese
-
Salsa (If I'm not
making my own, I like San Antonio Farms or Pace Picante
Sauce)
Pick a cheese, stick it
on a cracker and spoon salsa on top. |

BAKERY STUFF
You can order orange breads ahead of
time at most local bakeries. Simple PBJs are now Halloween-ish. A
regular yellow cake dyed orange and frosted with chocolate icing tastes
yummy and looks Halloween. Simpleness.
BAT OR
PUMPKIN CHIPS
Cut blue
corn tortillas into bat shapes using a pattern or a cookie cutter and
fry in hot oil til crispy. Drain on paper towels. Sprinkle with salt or
seasoned salt.
For pumpkin
chips, use orange tortillas or wraps cut with a pumpkin cutter. Some of
these are just dyed and some are made with yams. Fry as you would bat
chips.
CRUNCHY SNACK MIX
My favorite Halloween-looking snack
mix is
1 bag Cheetos
1 bag pretzel sticks
1 bag Fritos corn chips
1 bag Sun Chips
1 jar dry-roated peanuts
This makes quite a bit. Store in
several quart sized plastic bags until ready to serve. Looks nifty in
cheapo plastic cauldrons.
What is
Dracula's least favorite song? Sunshine on
my shoulders
EDIBLE
EYES
1 dozen
eggs, boiled
Your
favorite deviled egg recipe
Sliced
black olives
Ketchup
Piping bag
with thin tip
Mix deviled
eggs and stuff. Pipe ketchup strings over yolk mixture to resemble
bloodshot eyes. Place one olive slice in center of each.
EDIBLE SPIDERS AND FINGERS
Mix large box of lime Jello using only hot
water. Set in fridge to cool slightly. Meanwhile, mix small box of
vanilla pudding according to directions on box. Remove cooled Jello from
fridge and stir in vanilla pudding. Pour into spider-shaped candy
molds. Unmold and place on serving platter; cover with plastic wrap and
keep in fridge til ready to serve. This makes a fair amount of
liquid, so if you have plent of spiders and mixture left over, you can
make fingers. Pour mixture into an oiled jelly roll pan or cookie sheet.
Place maraschino cherry halves along edges, about finger width apart.
When set, cut out
fingers with a sharp knife.

GRAVEYARD CAKE
Bake your favorite cake in a 13x9
pan. Ice with chocolate ice cream and top with crushed Oreos. Cut a
bunch of Pepperage Farm Milano cookies in half. (if they break, cook
gets a treat) Place them around top of cake to look like headstones. Add
gummy worms or thin red licorice strings if you like.
HARRY POTTER'S PUMPKIN JUICE
2 cups of pumpkin, chopped up into chunks
2 cups of apple juice
½ cup of pineapple juice
1 teaspoon of honey (more or less to your liking
Juice the pumpkin pieces by squeezing through a cheesecloth
or using a juicer if you have one.
Pour the pumpkin juice, apple juice and pineapple juice into
a blender.
Add the honey (we recommend you start with 1 teaspoon, as
you can add some later!) to the juices and blend thoroughly.
Chill your pumpkin juice or serve iced and enjoy!
HARRY POTTER'S MUGGLE BUTTER BEER
12 ounces root beer or cream soda
1 tablespoon honey
2 teaspoons butter
Place soda in a microwave safe bowl and heat for about 30 seconds on
high. Remove and set aside. Melt butter in microwave.
Pour warm soda, butter and honey in a blender blend until well combined
Serve warm.
HARRY POTTER'S DRAGON SNOT
8 ounces Sprite or 7-Up soda
1 scoop lime sherbet
Serve with a spoon.
1/2 cup regular iced tea mix powder
1 cup orange breakfast drink mix, like tang
1 1/2 cups white sugar
4 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice
Measure all ingredients into a clean dry jar. Stir or shake well. 2-3
heaping teaspoon's with 1 mug hot water.
Serve hot or cold
JACK FINGER CAKES (TEA CAKES)
Bake a sheet cake and let cool. Use
a circle cookie cutter and cut out all the cakes. Place on a baking rack
with waxed paper underneath. Pour thin orange icing over the top. (you
can just microwave ready-made frosting for a few seconds) When icing has
set, pipe faces on with black icing or use the gel icing in tubes from
the grocery store.
JACK PIZZA
1 pound loaf frozen bread dough,
thawed
1 jar pizza or spaghetti sauce
8 oz. shredded mozarella
1 bell pepper, cut in strips
1 package sliced pepperoni, cut
into triangles.
1 can black olives, sliced
Preheat oven to temp recommended
on dough package.
Smoosh out dough into round
shape on cookie sheet or pizza pan. Spread with as much sauce as you
like. Sprinkle with cheese. Arrange strips of pepper, top to bottom, end
to end, to mimic lines on pumpkin. Stack a few up top for "stem".
Arrange pepperoni triangles to resemble Jack face. Arrange remaining
pepperoni triangles around edge of pizza. Put two olive rings on "eyes"
and the rest in between triangles around edge. Bake until crust is brown
and cheese is bubbly, 20-30 minutes.
Note:
If you prepare the dough and ingredients, and deal with the oven, you
could let the kids make this.
KID'S HALLOWEEN SAMMICHES
White bread
Several colors of food coloring in
water
Sandwich insides and condiments
Small paintbrushes
Let kids put their own sammiches
together with their favorite middles. Then use food coloring/water "paint" and brushes to
make spooky faces on one of the pieces of bread. Not too much water or
they'll get soggy.
White bread
Peanut Butter (jelly optional)
~or~ Canned chicken spread
(these two choices help stick bread
together and make this vy quick)
Ghost cookie cutters
Spread half of bread with fillings
and top with second piece of bread. Cut out with ghost cutter. How
simple can you get?
What is black, white,
orange, and waddles?
A penguin with a Jack O' Lantern.
MAGIC WANDS
Dip ends of large pretzel rods in vanilla frosting. Dip frosted end in
candy sprinkles.
MASHED POTATO GHOSTS
Mashed
potatoes
Can black
beans, drained
2
tablespoons cream cheese
Piping bag
with large round tip (icing bags)
Prepare
mashed potatoes as usual, adding cream cheese plus garlic salt if
desired. Place in piping bags. Pipe cone shapes onto lightly greased
cookie sheet. Place two black beans for eyes. Before serving, warm in
oven for about 10 minutes.
PUNCH THAT PUNCHES BACK
Grated orange and/or lemon and/or lime
peel
2 cans frozen orange juice
1 cup water
1 can frozen limeade
2-2 liter bottles 7Up
1 jar maraschino cherries
2-1.75 liter bottles rum
Green food coloring
Mix 1 can orange juice, using 2 cans water
instead of 3. Add peel and pour into ice cube trays. Mix remaining can
of orange juice, limeade, juice from cherries, water and booze together.
Add enough green food color to make suitably icky color. Slice cherries
in half. Place half in container in fridge. Place the rest in punch bowl
in fridge. When it's time to serve, add 1 bottle of 7Up to punch bowl
along with half of the orange cubes and half of the sliced cherries.
Repeat with second half of punch when bowl empties. If this punch is too
sweet for you, add more water or some soda water.
QUICK SNACK BOWL
Just mix some Goldfish crackers and
popped popcorn together for an orange-and-white bowl o' munchies.
READY MADE HALLO GOODIES
Your favorite donut shop can make up
donut holes out of chocolate dough and use Hallo sprinkles.
Veggie chips made of yellow or
orange squash are tasty and fit the theme. Add a few drops of yellow or
orange food coloring to purchased dip and it looks like you slaved over
a hot stove.

ROASTED PUMPKIN SEEDS
Preheat oven to 250 degrees.
Scoop out seeds and remove strings, but don't wash. Spread in a single
layer on a cookie sheet. Sprinkle seeds with salt or seasoned salt
and put into oven for 15-30 minutes, until they turn a light golden
color. Store in a jar for up to 1 week.
SEVERED FINGERS
Tortillas
Wienies
Ketchup
Toothpicks
Cut tortillas into strips about 3/4" wide. Cut wienies in
half. Warm tortilla strips in microwave. Wrap strips around cut end of
wienie so they look like bandages and secure with toothpick. Place on
cookie sheet and bake in preheated 350 degree oven for about 8 minutes.
Dab ketchup on ends of wienies for bloody fingernails.
SIMPLE PUNCH
1 package Black Cherry KoolAid
1 package Lemon Lime KoolAid
2 cups sugar
3 quarts water
2 liter bottle 7Up
Scoops of Lime Sherbet
Mix KoolAid, sugar and water in
punch bowl and refrigerate for a few hours. If you like, put some of it
into ice cube trays and freeze plastic spiders inside. Just before
serving time, remove from fridge, add 7Up and sherbet. To keep punch
cool, place punch bowl in larger bowl of ice.
Note:
These two flavors are picked cuz they make a cool yukky brown. You can
also add frozen grapes to help keep cold.
What is a monster's favorite ride? A roller ghoster.
WITCH'S HATS
Round fudge striped cookies or
chocolate covered round cookies
Green-tinted icing
Hershey's Kisses
Put a blob of icing in center of
cookie, and put a Kiss on top. Put enough icing on so it squishes out
the edge for the band of the hat. Or using a piping bag and wide tip and
pipe on a band. Oh yeah, unwrap the Kisses first.
THE WORMS CRAWL IN
Pick two small boxes of Jello that will make a creepy color. Lemon and
lemon-lime make a creepy green. Lime and cherry make an icky brown. Mix and put into a clear container, then
pop into fridge for half an hour, or until just slightly set. Now put in
as many gummy worms as you want.
Knock,
knock.
Who's there?
Howl.
Howl who?
Howl I know you're not a ghost!
