Haunt Dictionary

 

I'm starting this in August 2007 for myself and others who are just learning how to put together

a home or professional haunt. If you're feeling as confused as I have been, this may help.

Maybe this should be called a Glossary, but I'm not going to worry about that.

 

 

Animatronic  A form of robotics used to make props move

 

App  Application

 

Armature  Framework inside a prop that you build upon. Could be chicken wire, fake skeleton or pvc pipe, etc.

 

Axeworthy Flying Ghost Moving ghost prop using pully, crank and assorted moving parts

 

Bart 3/4 size artificial skeleton

 

Bleeding Portrait  A regular portrait turned into one that "bleeds" from eyes or other parts

 

Bleeding Fountain A fountain that uses fake blood instead of water

 

Blow Mold  A manufacturing process where hollow plastic parts are formed  AKA Blow Forming

 

Body Slinger  Pneumatic powered corpse that jumps out of coffin

 

Boris  Talking head you can buy already made. Many people hack it to make it do what they wanna

 

Bottomless Pit  A prop using mirrors and lights to give the illusion that it never ends

 

Bucky or Blucky   Skeleton

"Bucky" is a hard plastic skeleton made from molds of actual skeletons. Used for anatomy studies and haunters.

"Blucky" is a (usually cheap) softer plastic skeleton. It usually looks that way, too, and takes work to make it look like something you believe to be realistic.

 

Christmas Hack  Taking apart a Christmas decoration to turn into a Halloween one.

 

Con   Convention and/or Trade Show; HauntCon, ComiCon, DragonCon

 

Corpsify, Corpsing, Corpsification  Turning a fake skeleton into a corpse with rotting flesh and such.

 

Cryptmas  Haunter's term for Christmas. No offense intended.

Distressing  Making an object look old, worn, torn up and/or bloody

Doom Buggy  The cars you ride in at Disney's Haunted Mansion

Door Minder  A beam hooked up to a door which monitors movement. When the beam is broken it trips some type of action. Lights can go off, a prop begin to move or a scream sounds for example

 

Dougie   Fake Douglas fir tree that sings and dances

 

Drop Panel  A panel built into a wall or door that drops down to reveal something or someone scary. Often hidden behind a painting

 

 

Facade  Fake front such as a "stone" wall made of styrofoam

 

Fallen Angel   A hacked angel statue or doll, making it creepy, to decorate a tombstone

 

FCG   Flying Crank Ghost

 

Fixall   Plaster medium

 

Fog Machine  A device that heats up a mixture of chemicals that produces artificial fog

 

Fog Chiller  A device that cools artificial fog so it hugs the ground

 

Fog Juice   Chemical mixture added to a fog machine to produce artifical fog

 

FX   Effects

 

GLFF   Great Lakes Fright Fest

 

Gornament   Phrase coined by Stolloween to describe a group of Halloween ornaments

 

Great Stuff   Brand name for spray insulation foam. Used to fill or make sculpted props. Can be formed or sculpted to your choice of shapes.

 

Hack  Take apart one thing to make it into something else it was never supposed to be

 

Haunt  A place to get the pants scared off of you. May have actors or moving props.

 

Haunter  A (usually otherwise normal) person who enjoys putting together a haunt

 

HauntCon   Convention and Trade Show for haunters

 

Haunt Trail A haunt that takes place outside, following a trail or path that has been set up to scare the pants off you

 

Hexmas   Haunter's term for Christmas. No offense intended.

JOL  Jack O' Lantern

 

MIB  Management Information Base A database for managing devices that make props move, make noise or nifty things like that

 

Monster List  Resource for haunted how-to's. http://www.halloweenmonsterlist.info/

 

Monster Mud  Mixture of joint compound and latex paint used for many sculpting apps

 

Pepper's Ghost  An illusion technique using glass and lighting that makes an object seem to appear and disappear, or to morph from one thing into another

 

PM   Papier Mache

 

Pop Up or Pop-Up  A prop that jumps up out of something such as a grave

 

Prop  Any item that is used to scare you. Could be a full-size werewolf or a hand sticking out of the ground.

 

Prosthetic  Fake limb

 

Reaper  Grim Reaper (hopefully a) prop

 

Rock Speaker  A speaker inside  a fake rock. Yup, that's all it is. Oh, you may want to poke holes in it so the sound comes out.

 

Scene Setter  Backgrounds, usually made of paper, that  you put on a wall or garage door, etc., to set the scene or mood

 

SFX   Special Effects

 

Static Prop- One that doesn't move


Toe Pincher  A coffin that is narrow where the corpse's legs would be

 

TOT  Trick or Treater

 

Trash Can Trauma- A prop such as a monster or skeleton jumps up from a previously closed trash can

 

Vortex Tunnel A moving prop that you walk through, simulates a swirling vortex

 

Wall Crawler- A prop that appears to crawl up a wall or other object

 

Webber, Web Caster, Web Spinner or Web Shooter  Hot glue gun with fan adapted to make quantities of fake spider webs.
