I really had to think about this part. I
have a good dozen small canes that would work well for this, but if I put
them all up, we risk splitting the vote and having to run a tie breaker.
What I did was pick just 6 to chose from
for the inside. These are my least favorite of the available canes. My
mostest favorites will be saved for the outside.
The plan is to cover the foiled
rock with cane slices, then cover that with a sheet of scrap clay rolled
to the thickest setting on the pasta machine. Then I'll poke enough air
holes in it to avoid a 'splosion. After that's baked, we'll move on to
the next step and I'll really need your advice |

Now, what advice can you give
me before I start shakin' and bakin'?
Hiya Kim!
I vote cane #5 for the inside... nice and
bright, it gets dark in there!
Just a note... when I do my fish boxes and
rock purses, I don't use foil. On the small amulet sized things I think
the foil actually can introduce air pockets... more trouble that it's worth.
All I do is cornstarch my rocks and then cover them tightly, making sure
not to leave air pockets under the clay. Also, having done that... I didn't
have to poke any air holes in. They'll be visible later if you do... or
you'll have another step to repair them.
Just a few thoughts on the subject... take
them however you like... or
not. <grin> Have fun with it & good
luck!

I have covered a
heart shaped rock and made several amulets
from it. This is a fun process. I didn't cover my rock with
foil--just cornstarched it and went on. Good luck!

I wanted to tell you the same thing that Joanie did.
I also, don't use foil
on my rocks and don't pock any holes in
it. I just cover right over the rock
and don't even use a release. I haven't
had any problem of releasing the
clay from the rock.... pops right out.
Even if you do have problems...you
can always slice the side seam and repair
it later with CA glue on the slit
and TLS on the inside. The main thought
should be where you slice it so that
you can remove the rock easily.
Jody Bishel is the pro on this topic and
if you have any problems...I would
try to contact Jody. Also a
great idea for a hinge is fabric that has been
coated with TLS and baked first (Jody's
idea)....then cut a piece of the
fabric to the size needed. But that
is only if you are using a hinge for it.
Happy claying,
Helen from WA
I, too have stopped using foil
over my rocks--I find that it never
gets as smooth as I'd like. A dusting of talc seems sufficient and
if I kind of roll the rock around in my hands after
I apply the first clay, I can both smooth
the outside but feel it loosen from the rock inside.
