Balloons

Whatcha can do with

Papier Mache

and Balloons.

Experiment 1

September 7, 2007

Since I have a big old cone of nylon string, I thought I'd see if it would work when coated and wound around a balloon. Hoping to make some orb-y things, maybe coat them with GITD paint when dry.

But nylon doesn't wanna absorb the paste like cotton will. The balloon deflated quickly and this is what resulted. Interesting but not an orb.

Sad, ain't it?

sourdough when left in the hot sun.

It's easy to coat a balloon with paper strips. Kids made pinatas with it all the time. The first attempt probably woulda worked if I had kept track of layers, but I must only have put on 2 layers.

What I learned: commit to doing all 4 layers before stopping to pet small cute dog.

What else I learned: a balloon only partially covered and left in the hot sun deflates quickly.

Every attempt to continue resulted in

more dents, so I gave it up as a lesson

in what not to do.

A balloon successfully covered with 7 layers of newspaper and one of heavy duty drawing paper.

Yes you see a dent, courtesy of Tony, my just-turned-2 year old grandson. I let him have the wounded balloon above to play with and he let rip. He thought it was pretty slick of Grandma to hide a balloon inside for him to find.

Then he saw the one on the table...

Here's the culprit
