Cat Project and Problems

September 4, 2007

This cat is one of two patterns I d/l from a freebie site. Thomas cut two out of a cardboard box for me and I pm'ed one side of both halves for some stability.

Sides of a cereal box are even all around so I chose to cut those to go round the edges. As I figure it, that beats the heck out of having to use a ruler and try to cut straight on my own. Since it's a small project, I'm hoping the cardboard is strong enough. The cereal box cardboard was taped all around one side, bending and trimming to fit the shape of the cat.

Then the bottom part was taped and the sides started. This is where it starts to get tricky. As I started up the sides, the tape on the bottom strained and started popping off. I taped it back up and added more.

At this point I decided to do a layer of pm across the bottom and let it dry before continuing up the sides.

Once this is dry, I plan to work up the sides til I'm almost to the neck, add a layer of pm, let it dry and put something inside to add some weight to the bottom. Probably some more of the dry tile grout.

Cat Progress

The first part dried and is pretty rigid. I filled a plastic sandwich bag with tile grout, sealed and put in the bottom. Why? Because this will be sitting outside and it needs some weight in the bottom to keep from falling over or blowing away.

The sides are all taped up, clumsily, but the best I could do. As I went up the sides, I stuffed in wadded up newspaper, taped some more, stuffed, taped until I got to the head.

Naturally when you get to the smaller parts, nothing wants to fit right. I adjusted the best I could, planning to add more paper in the places it slumped. Hope I learn from this because I think it looks pretty bad.
