Sandy Camp

I am lucky enough to live in a city with a large guild. The San Diego Polymer Clay Guild (SDPCG) sponsors a retreat called Sandy Camp every year in the fall. 2005 was our 7th retreat. It's called Sandy Camp because the first retreat was at the beach and there was sand everywhere! I wasn't there, but I've heard amusing stories of unintended inclusions. The pictures on this page are some I've taken at this year's Sandy Camp.

For anyone who has never been to a clay retreat, let me tell you about it. Well, about ours anyway. You find a place that's big enough to hold everyone. Then you make sure they have enough electrical outlets to light up a small city (without blowing circuits). Then you talk them into letting you use all the tables in the place. See what artists you can get to come (cajole, bribe, con) to do some demos. Tap the artists in your guild to do demos. IMHO, 3 or 4 demos per day is plenty. Any more and there's not time to schmooze and reconnect with friends or even get your hands on the clay. Contact clay companies, stamp companies, paint and ink companies, anything to do with polymer clay and see what they are willing to donate for raffle prizes. Raffles are always a hit and your group can recoup some of your costs with the proceeds.

A plus is a local market to get ice and film (and whatever you've forgotten to bring). although it is a bit pricey.

A hint for smooth sailing: treat the staff like gold. Thank them often, give them clay goodies and show them what you're doing. Give them a piece of clay to play with and get them hooked. Be prepared for snafus and be kind to those who are working hard to smooth them out for you.

Now you go to the retreat packed with everything you'd take to a Clay Day, meet new people, learn new things, eat too much junk food and stay up past your bedtime.
